Screening conditions

ItemCondition
Dividend yield3% or more, on dividends actually paid
PER20 or less
PBR3 or less
ROE5.0% or more
Interest-bearing debtNo larger than shareholders’ equity
As of2 Oct 2026 (US closing price)

Stocks meeting every condition: 35.

The Japanese ranking on this site uses stricter conditions (PBR 1 or less, PER 10 or less, net cash). Applied to US stocks, those leave only a handful of names, because US high-dividend stocks are concentrated in telecoms, utilities and REITs, which carry heavy debt. The conditions here are adjusted to US levels.

Matching stocks, by dividend yield

Share price and dividend are in US dollars. PBR, PER and ROE are the same figures used for screening.

How the list is narrowed down

The starting point is every stock listed on the NYSE and Nasdaq (about 6,000 companies). No broker or data-site screener is used; every figure is recalculated from the XBRL in annual and quarterly reports filed with the SEC.

StageStocks
Universe (stocks with XBRL figures)5,440
Operating companies (banks, insurers, REITs and BDCs excluded)4,054
Stocks where all five conditions can be judged2,188
plus ROE 5.0% or more1,025
plus interest-bearing debt no larger than equity673
plus pays a dividend360
plus a share price was available360
plus PBR 3 or less and PER 20 or less117
plus has paid dividends for at least a year111
plus dividend yield 3% or more35

The condition that cuts the most is "interest-bearing debt no larger than equity". US companies routinely fund themselves with bonds, so the well-known dividend payers in telecoms, utilities, tobacco and REITs are almost wiped out by it. The high-yield stocks that do pass are mostly small and mid caps.

ROE and the debt condition do not change when the share price moves. They are applied first, and only the stocks that survive have their prices and dividend histories fetched.

Notes

Every figure is calculated from SEC EDGAR XBRL data (annual reports on Form 10-K and quarterly reports on Form 10-Q). PER uses diluted EPS for the latest full year, ROE is full-year net income divided by equity at the latest quarter end, and PBR uses book value per share, derived from equity divided by shares outstanding.

The dividend is "the latest payment × payments per year". US companies do not publish an annual dividend forecast; the board declares each quarterly payment, so annualising the latest payment is the usual practice. If the latest payment was a special dividend, the median of the past year’s payments is used instead. A * in the "Basis" column marks stocks whose past year included a special (unusually large) dividend.

Stocks that paid only once in the past two years are not listed, so that a one-off special dividend does not show up as a high yield. For the same reason, yields above 25% are treated as outliers and excluded.

"Ex-div months" are the months in which the stock went ex-dividend over the past year. Payment usually follows two to four weeks later. Please check each company’s own investor relations pages for exact dates.

Banks, insurers, mortgage REITs and BDCs are excluded. Their balance sheets are not split into current and non-current items, and deposits or repo funding are the business itself, so "interest-bearing debt" cannot be compared on the same footing.

ADRs and other stocks whose per-share figures and share price are in different units are also excluded. A stock is dropped automatically when EPS × shares outstanding is far from net income. Companies with several share classes are not listed when shares outstanding cannot be pinned to a single figure.

All amounts are in US dollars, before tax. Withholding and other taxes depend on where you live, so the yield you actually receive will be lower than the figure shown.

Definitions differ between data providers, so these figures will not match those shown by brokers or other sites.

During earnings season, some stocks can lag by a day or two, because the amount read from the SEC in one update is capped.

Stocks without a recent full-year result, quarter-end balance sheet and dividend history are excluded, since they cannot be judged. Recently listed companies fall into this group.
