How the list is narrowed down
The starting point is every listed company that files an earnings report. No broker or data-site screener is used; every figure is recalculated from the XBRL attached to the earnings reports.
| Stage | Stocks |
|---|---|
| Companies with an earnings report on file | 3,326 |
| Companies where all five conditions can be judged | 165 |
| plus ROE 5% or more | 122 |
| plus enterprise value below market cap (net cash) | 79 |
| plus a dividend forecast | 65 |
| plus PBR 1 or less and PER 10 or less | 7 |
| plus dividend yield 3% or more | 5 |
The condition that cuts the most is "enterprise value below market capitalisation". Property developers, construction, leasing, utilities, shipping and the large trading houses are almost wiped out by it, because they carry heavy debt.
ROE and net cash do not change when the share price moves. They are applied first, and only the stocks that survive have their prices fetched.
Notes
Every figure is calculated from the XBRL attached to earnings reports. PBR uses book value per share, derived from shareholders’ equity divided by shares outstanding less treasury stock. PER uses the latest full-year actual EPS, and ROE uses full-year actual profit divided by shareholders’ equity. The dividend yield is the company forecast for the annual dividend divided by that day’s closing price.
EV is market capitalisation plus interest-bearing debt minus cash. "EV below market cap" therefore reduces to "cash above interest-bearing debt", which can be judged without a share price. Interest-bearing debt is the sum of short-term loans, current portion of long-term loans, long-term loans, bonds and lease obligations.
"Basis" refers to the dividend figure. Every stock here uses the company forecast; actual paid dividends are not used.
"Paid in" is estimated from the fiscal year end. Japanese companies pay the year-end dividend after the shareholders’ meeting, about three months after the period ends, and the interim dividend six months apart from that. Where an earnings report states the planned payment date, the year-end month is replaced with the actual one. Please check each company’s own investor relations pages for exact dates.
Definitions differ between data providers, so these figures will not match those shown by brokers or other sites.
Banks, insurers and industries where the meaning of interest-bearing debt differs, such as leasing and consumer finance, need care when reading EV.
On days when many companies report, some stocks can lag by a day or two, because more than a thousand reports are filed and the number read in one update is capped.
Stocks without a recent full-year result, balance sheet and dividend forecast are excluded, since they cannot be judged. Recently listed companies fall into this group.
Company names in English come from the Japan Exchange Group list of listed issues. Where a name is not yet on that list, the Japanese name is shown.
