Japan Market Daily – Sep 28, 2026
Monday, September 28, 2026
On September 28, the Nikkei 225 fell for the first time in six sessions, closing down 486.58 yen (-0.73%) from the previous Friday at 65,877.62. The TOPIX also slipped 16.59 points (-0.40%) to 4,112.00. Stocks opened higher following gains on Wall Street, but profit-taking set in after the initial buying and pushed the index into negative territory. A rise in Japan's long-term interest rate to 3.095% and a decline in the Korea Composite Stock Price Index also weighed on the market, and losses widened toward the close. By contribution, Ibiden dragged the index down by about 69 yen, Advantest by about 65 yen, Fast Retailing by about 62 yen, and Kioxia Holdings by about 57 yen, while SoftBank Group added about 76 yen. By sector, insurance, banks, and electric power and gas rose, while pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper, and mining fell. Turnover on the TSE Prime Market was 8.2028 trillion yen. In Tokyo forex trading, the dollar stood at 157.67 yen as of 3 p.m.
