Background: On September 23, Anthropic announced that its AI model Claude had autonomously discovered a new enzyme system resembling CRISPR. The system, named ART, was found in giant bacteriophages and consists of three components: a reverse transcriptase, a partner gene, and evenly spaced DNA repeat sequences arranged much like CRISPR arrays. Anthropic said Claude processed 210 million tokens over 21 hours using 950 agents, narrowing roughly 3,500 candidates from more than 200,000 reverse transcriptases. Gene-editing shares fell on the news on September 23, with CRSP down 6%, Beam Therapeutics also down 6% and Prime Medicine down 12%. The system's function remains unproven, however, and observers note that turning it into a therapy would take many years.
