On September 11, 2026, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 fell sharply, closing down 1,259.61 points (-1.93%) at 64,011.34, its lowest in about a month. The TOPIX also declined, losing 26.28 points to 4,028.30. Crude oil prices surged on concerns over disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, with Brent topping 109 dollars a barrel and WTI exceeding 100 dollars, and combined with inflation worries from rising long-term interest rates, selling dominated in semiconductor and AI-related shares. The decline exceeded 2,000 points at one stage. Advantest and SoftBank Group alone subtracted about 748 points from the index, and together with Tokyo Electron and Kioxia the four names accounted for about 979 points of the drop. On the other side, auto shares on the weaker yen, megabanks benefiting from higher rates, and resource and trading house shares benefiting from higher oil were bought. USD/JPY traded between 154.21 and 154.61.
