Background: The A-share market was weak that day, with the Shanghai Composite down 0.43%, the Shenzhen Component down 0.77% and the ChiNext Index down 0.49% on turnover of RMB 1.6471 trillion; 955 stocks rose while 4,512 fell. Bank shares bucked the trend, and the stock gained more than 3% to set a record high, with Bank of Jiangsu, Bank of Hangzhou and Bank of Chengdu also reaching record highs. The catalyst was the Ministry of Finance's announcement that it will soon issue RMB 300 billion of special treasury bonds to inject a combined RMB 360 billion into eight central financial institutions, including up to RMB 100 billion for ICBC and up to RMB 160 billion for Agricultural Bank of China. Analysts estimate the replenishment of core tier-one capital could support asset expansion of up to about RMB 4 trillion. In addition, at least 20 A-share listed banks disclosed 2026 interim dividend plans totaling about RMB 266.1 billion in cash, of which the six largest banks accounted for a record RMB 221.0 billion.
