Background: Bloomberg reported that a consortium of US investment firm Advent International and payments company Stripe had abandoned a takeover bid worth more than $50 billion, sending shares down 12.71%, or $7.81, to close at $53.66. Volume reached 36.2 million shares, 124% above the three-month average. Takeover speculation began with a Bloomberg report in February, and the stock had risen more than 40% this quarter before the deal premium evaporated. According to The Wall Street Journal, PayPal management had deemed the initial proposal insufficient and was negotiating for a higher price. Bloomberg noted the situation remains fluid and that the two firms could return with a renewed offer at a later date. On the same day, the S&P 500 fell 0.27% and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.52%.
